This week we discuss the all-new 2023 Nissan Ariya, the second electric vehicle to join the automaker's EV roster behind the Leaf. We discuss the extensive Ariya model lineup, how it stacks up against other electric car competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Volkswagen ID.4, and Subaru Solterra. We also debate how future-proof the new Nissan may be, and answer an audience question about backup camera design.
    SHOW NOTES:

This would have been great technology for about 2015. It's 2023 however and they want a $47,000 starting price? They must have some deals with fleets as consumers are not looking to spend $50k for this level of content.

Having been to a ride and drive event near Chicago back in June of 2022, I think most of their observations are fair and accurate. The Ariya responded very well vs the competition on the test track we used though we were limited to a FWD Ariya on that track as opposed to the 389 HP AWD, e-4orce model. That should be a whole different driving experience though obviously it's more money as well. We did get to drive ProPilot 2.0 on highways with hands free capability and lane change and it was a bit of an odd feeling having never experienced that before, though I suspect a person would get used to it. It's a great feature that worked like a charm (It Better!) as did the ProPilot park feature. I agree there are way too many model choices and had this model debuted 3 years ago it would have had more of a leg up on the competition but the constant delays haven't helped. It is roomy and comfortable, I guess the market will decide about price point, lack of ePedal, charging specifications etc. I don't claim to be an expert on all available competitors but I would say it's a competent choice in the current market place though it certainly doesn't blow away the rest of the field.

Agreed. I've been annoyed by gages hidden behind the steering wheel for decades. The only exception was a Toyota Echo with the dash centered cluster. Normal cars have me ducking to see the heart of the speedometer.

When I tested the fwd, it was way down the list. And I would agree with most of what you said. But when I tested the awd on a long trip, it went to the top. And I actually bought one, another thing is that I started to like most of the other things also.

Well I am certainly glad to see they did not put any high gloss black plastic in this vehicle. I drive a newer Mazda and it is everywhere and shows fingerprints, dust, and water spots. I hope this trend like the Nissan is using in this EV continues❤

    • @Mabeylater293
      @Mabeylater293 Год назад

🤦‍♂️The problem is dust, fingerprints and water spots NOT THE HIGH GLOSS. Getting rid of the high gloss is like throwing out the baby with the baby water. All manufacturers have to do is laminate it Ace those problems are solved.

I had a VW Golf with the flip up rear camera behind the logo. It kept the camera clean, yes, but due to VW poor quality the mechanism broke and it costs over $500 to fix. One of the many reasons why I don’t have that car anymore.

That brake pedal thing sounds odd. When we had the Bolt it was great. Blended brakes that were normal and it brought the car to a stop, other than it didn't leave the brake lights on. It also had, in the top trim, the washer for the rear camera. But I just have the habit of rubbing my sleave over the camera of our Forester each time I'm back there and it hasn't been a problem. Just the trade offs of building a car and deciding what to include to hit the target MSRP.

I really wish these guys test thoroughly before opining. Most of these are opinions. True it has slow charging, but check bjrons channel to see how flat the curve is. Sure it’s expensive but the Kia dealer near my house wants me to pay 68K. This is infinitely cheaper. Yes, it’s not the most powerful but you haven’t driven the AWD model. Sure one pedal is missing, but that’s no KPI. If the braking was aggressive, I don’t understand why each reviewer has different opinions, some like it, some don’t. Just coz teslas or Kias work a certain way, it doesn’t make them the benchmark. Again, all excellent cars, but I think the objectivity has dissolved massively. You should preface an opinion with a disclaimer that it’s an opinion, not a metric.

I test drove an Ariya back in the summer during a Nissan event. Having driven there in a Leaf, I was really underwhelmed. I was really dismayed about the lack of one-pedal driving. This was a huge miss. The interior was quite nice however. Exterior and storage was meh.

Too bad they made it so sloped at the back. The Rogue has a much better shape. The Ariya does not look practical for that reason alone.
Plus the price starts at 53 grand. Plus bullshit fees that brings it up to 56 grand.
But that's the base model, and the dealers won't get that one. They'll play games how they can't get one. They always lie those people - every single time - and they all do it.
So the one level up is 60 grand. Plus bullshit fees is 63 grand.
63 grand for an EV. It has a good range, but still, a trip from Montreal to Toronto, you will need to charge at least once to get back, so there's a problem.
How about a Rogue instead. Let it be 41 grand after bullshit fees for a nice SV one. That's 22 grand less.
If you spend 2 grand in gas per year, that's 11 years worth of gas.
What's the point of this EV again? Bragging rights? Or is the the 5.1 seconds 0-60? I'm not participating in the race, so they win nothing.

CR - the ARIYA is less safe than a TESLA model Y, its LACKING a proper FRUNK & front Crumple zone because of the FWD version. TESLA only make RWD/AWD cars that all are 5 star crash rated and EXCEED passenger & pedestrian.
